Samastipur College, Samastipur, is the first institution of higher learning opened to cater to the educational needs of the people of Samastipur, established in 1947, Aliated to first Patna University in 1949 for Intermediate. On establishment of Bihar University the college had been aliated to this university in 1953 onwards for Intermediate (Arts and Science) as well as for Bachelor (Arts and Science) courses. Further on establishment of L.N. Mithila University the college had been aliated to this university in 1972 onwards for Intermediate , Bachelor and Master courses. The College became a Constituent unit of L.N. Mithila University in 1976. The College was recognized by UGC under its section 2(f) & 12(B) in Nov 1976.
The college has come a long way from the time the pioneers envisioned and undertook the dicult task of establishing a college at a time when only a few truly enlightened and far-sighted persons were prepared to support this infant project in a place where higher education was frowned upon, if not rejected outright. Established by provision of 15 acres of land and the collective financial help of the great visionary villagers of Samastipur Subdivision especially Late Thakur Prasad Sharma, Ram Charitra Singh,Sri Balram Singh, ETC.. In the later stage the big donor was G.D. Birla through Ex Governor of MP, Sri Satyanarayan Sinha.
Well-equipped labs, a rich library, reading rooms are some of the basic state of the art educational facilities. Study centers for IGNOU and Maulana Azad National Urdu Open University, Hyderabad (MANUU) are oering a number of certificate, diploma and degree programs in distant mode. Regular consultation classes and remedial sessions are held for the students of the programs under IGNOU and MANUU.
NSS and NCC programs are part of outreach activities of the college inculcating the patriotism and the feeling of social service in the students. The students thus succeed in creating a society which has love, freedom, liberty, justice, equality and fraternity.
Samastipur College has developed itself as a center of learning in the region for students from far- o rural and urban areas. This college has had a glorious past and even at present it is a premier institute of higher education catering to the needs of the young generation for development of the society. Located in the outskirts of Samastipur town, the college enjoys a lush green campus and a huge play-ground. It is situated near to Burhi Gandak river and is easily reachable from Samastipur Junction as well as from Bus stand. The college currently oers B.A., B.Sc., M.A. and M.Sc. programs. Several learned faculties have guided and are currently supervising research scholars towards their Ph.D.
The college has served as a breeding platform for several persons of eminence and administrators.
